Recycled Earth Day Art Project

During our Earth Day discussions, we often talk about how we can be more mindful of our footprint and this includes things like recycling and reusing. While magazines are no longer as popular as they once were, my bet is you can find some old ones lying around. Don’t have any yourself? Ask your families if they have any that they would be willing to donate. This project is an easy way to give life back to old magazines and repurpose that paper.

Duration: 60 + minutes

Materials:

  • Black construction paper

  • Old magazines

  • White paper

  • Pencil

  • Scissors

  • Glue

  • White acrylic paint

  • Water

  • Large bristle paint brush

  • Paper for poem or other writing

Procedure:

  1. On a white sheet of paper, draw a circle and outline where the land and water will be. There is no need to make the continents look perfect, the Earth will be recognizable either way.

  2. Rip up green and blue sections of old magazines. We want the pieces to be small enough that we can see a collage effect.

  3. Glue the pieces onto the white paper.

  4. Once the whole Earth is complete, cut it out so that the edges are neat.

  5. Mix white acrylic paint and a small splash of water. Use a large bristle brush to splatter the black paper with the paint, making it look like stars. It’s best to do this outside as it can get quite messy. **If you can, do this before students are done so that the paint has time to dry.

  6. Write a poem (pictured is a haiku I wrote), promise to the earth or any other bit of writing. (French template below)

  7. Glue the Earth and the writing onto your star speckled black sheet.
