Rainy Day Umbrella Art Project

Here on the west coast of BC, it rains A LOT. That means a lot of rain jackets, boots and umbrellas around. This fun project is multi-media and adds a pop of colour to your bulletin board.

Since this project features an arm, this is a great time to pull out those multicultural construction paper packs. Students are able to choose the paper that best fits them. It’s an easy way to include all students and showcase the diversity in your class.

Timeline: 60 minutes

Materials:

• Cardstock

• Pencil

• Oil pastel (all colours)

• Construction paper (to match various skin tones)

• Tempera paint (I use pucks)

• Paintbrush

• Tinfoil

• Scissors

• Glue stick

Procedure:

• Sketch an umbrella onto the card stock with the pencil. Make sure there are clear umbrella sections.

• Use oil pastel to colour in the umbrella. Choose any colours you’d like. I tell the students that the handle should be black or brown but their top can be any colour.

• Paint the background a shade of blue, or grey (if that’s an option).

• Choose a piece of paper that best fits your skin tone. Cut out an arm and a hand that will hold the umbrella.

• Glue it onto the paper so that it “holds” the umbrella. You may need to cut off some excess arm if it’s too long.

• Cut raindrops out of tinfoil and glue them around the umbrella.
