Crawling Colours Science Experiment

This is a physics experiment that focuses on capillary action and colour mixing. This particular experiment can be tricky and doesn’t always work. It also takes time, so be patient, but you may need to add more food colouring to help the colours along.

Materials:

  • 5 clear glasses or jars

  • Primary colour food colouring (red, yellow, blue)

  • Paper towels

  • Water (enough to fill 5 glasses or jars)

Procedure:

  • Fill 5 jars with water.

  • To the first three jars, add 5-6 drops of red to one, yellow to the next and blue to the third.

  • Organize jars RED – WATER – YELLOW – WATER – BLUE

  • Roll up a piece of paper towel and dip one end into red, the other into the water jar. Next roll up another, dip one end into the water, the other end into yellow. Repeat with all jars.

  • Leave the jars to sit and watch what happens to the paper towel and clear water jars.
