Mondrian Style Hearts

Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter who was known for his abstract art. You can learn more about him here.

This project is based off his 1921 Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Gray, and Blue where he limited to his colour palette and used this black lines to block off his colours.

This is a fun twist for a Valentine’s project but if you don’t want to do hearts, you can absolutely do the same process on any shape.

Time required: 40-60 minutes

Materials:

  • White paper (printer weight is fine)

  • Red, blue, yellow paint

  • Black construction paper

  • Paint brush (smaller is ideal)

  • Scissors

  • Glue

  • Ruler

  • Pencil

Steps:

  1. Either print a heart shape for students or have them draw their own.

  2. Use a ruler and pencil to draw straight lines vertically and horizontally across the heart. We want to see sections that are different sizes so they have a lot of freedom with this.

  3. Paint the sections in yellow, red and blue. Make sure to leave some sections white. It’s ok if it’s not perfect, we’ll be covering where the lines are. Allow to dry for a few minutes.

  4. Cut black construction paper into thin strips and glue them anywhere there’s a line. (I know I forgot one in the photos…I noticed it after! Whoops). Again, it’s ok for them to go over the heart edge because we’ll be cutting it out.

  5. If you drew the heart yourself or your printer toner is as light as mine, we’ll cut off the black border from the heart. If you have a nice dark border that will match your black construction paper, no need to cut it off. If you do cut it off, we’ll add a black border by gluing the heart onto black paper and cutting around it.
